This is our brand new blog on our brand new website. Here you will soon find news and blog posts about everything we’re up to in the Talent Development arena. We thought we would use it to give a brief introduction to who we are, how we got here, and what we plan to do. If you’re reading this then it is most likely that you are either a) a frustrated professional involved in the talent acquisition process or b) a frustrated job seeker. Either way, we have something for you at Career Odyssey.
For specifics of exactly what we do you can visit our website as we continue to develop it in the coming months. But here we will tell you why you will benefit from our upcoming offerings.
For job seekers it’s an all too familiar a scenario as you submit hundreds of applications online with little effort, but also with little hope of receiving a response. Resume after resume goes into the “Black Hole” never to be heard from again.
It is no surprise, many job seekers give up. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 909,000 job seekers last year admitted they hadn’t looked for work because they had become so discouraged.
Employers also hate the hiring process. They’d rather be doing their work than screening piles of applications that often are misleading. Companies are so inundated with resumes that they have to resort to automated applicant tracking systems that quickly weed out candidates in hopes of trying to manage down to a handful of qualified applicants. Applicant tracking software makes it almost impossible for a job candidate to stand out, at least at the initial screening step, instead matching up keywords as the supposed solution.
Most recruiters use boring, generic, job description-based postings that attract a high volume of applicants, and then must take additional time to weed out the bad candidates. The expectation is always that maybe, just maybe, a few good people remain at the end.
It’s not surprising, then, that the process can be frustrating for both sides. It’s also not surprising that employee turnover is a whopping 3 percent per month – according to the BLS – with The Wynhurst Group reporting that 22 percent of all turnover occurs within the first 45 days of employment. It’s ironic that employers still cling to the standard hiring process when clearly the process is broken.
